With the completion of 75 glorious years of independence, Shyam Shah Medical College is also celebrating its fascinating 60 years. Established in the year 1965, the Department of Surgery has grown by leaps and bounds over the five decades of its glorious journey, meeting the academic and clinical demands of students and patients alike.
Started initially at Gandhi Memorial Hospital with 102 beds across 3 wards, the Department now functions at Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital spanning 2 floors. It is fully fledged with 5 surgical units, 180 beds in wards, an 8-bedded Neurosurgical ICU, a 14-bedded Surgical ICU, and 20 private ward beds.
We feature an advanced operation theatre complex for General, Neuro, Plastic, Pediatric, and Laparoscopic surgeries along with GI endoscopies. A dedicated, full-fledged air-conditioned Burn unit under NPPMB was inaugurated on 01/11/2021 with a modular OT and ICU. A 24x7 emergency unit also functions under the department.
At present, there are 16 faculty members, including super-specialists. This year, the annual intake of postgraduate students has increased from 13 to 20, alongside 5 posts of SR. Our library, seminar hall, and newly established student lounge provide a highly comfortable and encouraging academic environment.
Academics, skill enhancement, and research go hand in hand for our postgraduate students. Many of our postgraduates have cleared super specialty courses and are working across prestigious institutes in India. The department has also extended its services to the super specialty block, expanding the learning curriculum.
During the tough times of the COVID-19 pandemic, our faculty and residents worked relentlessly and hand-in-hand with stakeholders in wards and ICUs with utmost dedication.
In October 2022, the Department celebrated its glorious 50 years with a Golden Jubilee Alumni Meet, welcoming around 150 alumni from India and abroad. The Department had organised a breast cancer awareness fortnight featuring Pinkathon Walk, CME, Workshop and various competitions.
ICMR has started a senior fellowship research project, "Identification and characterization of molecular markers for colorectal cancers" with Prof. Dr. Priyank Sharma as Principal Investigator.
A total of 42 research papers have been successfully published under the Department of Surgery in various national and international journals in the last 3 years.
The department organized a CME on "Basic and recent trends in Plastic surgery" in Oct 2019 with an allotment of 2 credit hours from the Medical Council, Bhopal.
A Guest Lecture was organized on the topic "Evaluation of Breast lump in OPD and Changing paradigms in anorectal malformations" in Aug 2022 by eminent faculty members from NSCB Medical College, Jabalpur.
A CME on "Opportunities and challenges in the 21st century for surgical trainees" was organized on 14th Oct 2022 with an allotment of 2 credit hours from the Medical Council, Bhopal.
Dr. Dinesh Patel (MCh Neurosurgery, Asst. Prof.) attended the 3rd World Congress on Spine Endoscopy as a guest speaker presenting on U/L Bi-portal Endoscopic Spine Surgery.
Dr. (Mrs) Rachna Gupta (Professor) was appointed as speaker and chairperson at the AIIMS Bhopal CME on Breast Awareness on 29th October 2022.
Prof. Dr. Vinod Yedalwar was appointed as chairperson at AIIMS, Bhopal in the CME on Breast Cancer Awareness on 29th October 2022.
Dr. Saurabh Saxena (MCh Plastic Surgery, Assoc. Prof.) was appointed as an observer at the National CME & Workshop on Burns at Bhopal in December 2022.
Dr. Ajay Patidar MS (SR) received a Certificate of Appreciation for his dedicated service during the COVID-19 pandemic by Shyam Shah Medical College.
